Please settle a discussion between my brother and I. He wants to rent a car and drive around Philadelphia. In my mind, this is a bad idea because he is a terrible driver, and I want to take public transportation. So, for our Philly affiliates, do you recommend public transportation in the city of Brotherly Love?

Sheila,

It all depends upon where in Philly you want to travel. If you mean just around the historic parts of the city (where more than likely the hotel will be), then I say go with walking and taking public transit, which here it's called Septa.

If you mean traveling to Valley Forge from center city, or going to the Jersey shore, or going to any of the casino's, whether in PA or NJ, I would say rent a car.

There's also a taxi-cab, so if you do not rent a car and are staying in a center city hotel and need to get to Popi's for dinner, a taxi is the way to go instead of Septa.

If you rent a car, there's another option besides the normal Avis or Budget ... there's Philly Car Share. Philly Car Share I have not used their services but know friends that have; however I do not know if you can rent from there if you don't live in Philly.

Once you know which hotel you're staying at, email me where you want to travel to and I'll let you know if the areas are safe for traveling on Septa or if you should rent a car. :D

Wayne and I will definitely be doing the historic district of the city. It will be the only time we tour historic sites where no one will be telling us to hurry up except maybe the tour guide. I defnitely want to see the two historic Meeting Houses and we both will want to check out Christ Church grave yard and Independence Hall. The only place that I wanted to see but probably want is Bartram's Garden. Word is it is not located in a good neighborhood. And although, my brother would never admit it, he will be totally freaked being in a big city. So, the less we have to venture out of a comfort zone, in this case - historical sites, the better.

If you go to Bartram's Garden's, I suggest getting there when they open.

FROM THE WEST VIA I-76
(SCHUYLKILL EXPRESSWAY)

Travel east and south through Center City to Exit 346B, Gray’s Ferry Avenue.

Bear left on exit ramp and turn left at light on to 34th Street/University Avenue. At next light turn right on Gray’s Ferry Avenue and cross Schuylkill River.

Take first left on to Paschall Avenue. Turn left at next light on to 49th Street and around bend on to Gray’s Avenue. Follow trolley tracks and bear left at fork on to Lindbergh Boulevard.

Just beyond 54th Street sign and immediately after crossing railroad bridge make sharp left turn into entrance, which is not visible until after crossing bridge.
FROM CENTER CITY

Take 23rd Street south below Market Street and merge right on to Gray’s Ferry Avenue just beyond South Street, then follow directions above.

FROM DELAWARE, BLUE ROUTE,
& POINTS SOUTH VIA I-95N

Follow I-95N past Philadelphia International Airport. Take Exit 13, Central Philadelphia, 76/291 West, and continually keep to right.

Take exit for 291 West. Turn right on to Island Avenue and stay right. Cross under highway and turn right at light on Bartram Avenue and left at second light on to Essington Avenue. Proceed straight on Essington and turn left at first light on 70th Street. Go straight and turn right at next light on to Lindbergh Boulevard. Follow Lindbergh Boulevard to Garden entrance on right just after Elmwood Avenue joins with Lindbergh.
FROM NEW JERSEY
& POINTS NORTH VIA I-95S

Follow I-95S past Center City. Take Exit 14, Bartram Avenue, and proceed to second light at Essington Avenue. Turn right and follow directions above.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Take No. 36 Trolley from City Hall to 54th Street. Cross railroad bridge to Garden entrance on left.



PS - If I'm available, I can always drive you there; I've never been to the garden's myself and wouldn't mind going ... let's see what I'm doing closer to the date.
