The filthy 13 were a group from the 506th's Regimental HQ who shaved mohawks on their heads and painted their faces ala Indian style. The book covers this demolition squad fromn Taccoa to Bertchesgaden. I have only started this book tonight but its a beaut. I recomend it highly.

Brian,

What a great opportunity to travel with Jack Agnew. He is an amazing man with allmost total recall of events a half a century old. He stands out in the book with some great stories.

History of the sub-unit within the ranks of the 101st Airborne that attained legendary status, and become notorious. Never ones to salute an officer, or take a bath, this squad became singular within the Screaming Eagles for its hard drinking and savage fighting skill, and that was only in training. In its spearhead role, the 13 suffered heavy casualties and by the end of the war 30 men had passed through the squad. This book describes a group of hardscrabble guys whom any respectable person would be loath to meet in a bar or dark alley. But they were an integral part of the U.S. war against Germany, and to this day the filthy 13 remain a legend within the ranks of the 101st Airborne, 16 pages of photos,

Hi guys,

Trying to get this straight (don't quite understand it yet):

Are these the men where the series "The dirty dozen" (with Teddy Savalas, etc) was based on?

A group of criminals given the choice: stay behind bars or fight behind enemy lines.

I always thought it was a purely fictional story... perhaps I am wrong.

Regars,

an outsider.

The Movie was a fictionalized version. The basis for the novel and eventually the movie was their lack of bathing and shaving. The were notorious troublemakers, poaching while in Aldebourne and fighting in Newberry and Swindon at dances. They were the demolitions platoon from HQ Co, therefore the basis for blowing up things ,( like a chateau in the movie). The criminal element was added and the other actions were heavily fictionalized by Hollywood to juice up the flick. This was the seeedfrom which the movie sprang.

Jake McNiece and Jack Agnew were back for the 60 Aniversary in Bastogne last week. I don't know if Andy Rassmussen made it. They are the 3 remaining members of the Thirteen.

"The Dirty Dozen" confused a lot of people who also saw "The Devil's Brigade" at the same time...which was which. But it's very much a 1960s movie -- the hard-case antiheroes, complete with the token black guy, sticking their collective thumbs in the face of authority. Notice that the clean-cut American paratroopers run around in red berets -- that wasn't American paratrooper uniform at the time. It's an entertaining picture, though.

As I recall the sequence from the book, the "Filthy 13" achieved notoriety as a result of a "Stars and Stripes" article during 1944 that made them pariahs to the brass -- on an even broader basis than they were already. That "Stars and Stripes" article lingered in people's memories long after the war, and was the inspiration for the almost totally fictional script for "The Dirty Dozen."
