Part of the problem Lewis had with the role was getting to know Winters. Dick is extremely private and he told me when he was on the set, Lewis glued himself by his side and observed him closely the whole time. And Lewis writes in the Preface that he first phoned Dick from the actors boot camp, and through subsequent calls, earned Dick's trust. In the Preface he writes that Dick is "not given to romanticizing the past. He was a man whose recollections were analytical, pragmatically ordered, not emotional, a man who was happier answering questions on technical maneuvers or what boot he wore his knife on, than what he felt."
I heartily agree with that, from my own experience. Once he got to know Dick, though, Damian wrote he found "warmth, a wickedly dry sense of humor and a willingness to listen that is not often found of men of power." In portraying Dick, Damian said he needed "a precision and an unfailing committment to the truth. It's what Dick always demanded of himself and others." During the post production meeting, he said Dick treated him like a son and showed him around his farm There's your sneak preview for the day, Gang. |

There's your sneak preview for the day, Gang. Lol! I love that Damian pointed that out - about Dick's wicked, dry sense of humor. It's something that I have come to recognize after months of reading articles, and watching what interviews I have of him. Now, whenever I see an interview I haven't seen before, I find myself laughing over certain things Dick says, that a year ago I wouldn't have seen as funny - I simply didn't have a feel for his personality. I've had the same reaction to Damian's portrayal, too - things that didn't strike me as funny the first couple of times, I recognize as Winters being a bit of a rascal. I guess Dick and Damian spent a week together in Paris right? Was it during the whole HBO premiere in Normandy? But anyway, as far as Damian being involved as though he was family like several of the other guys were, I'd say it has to do with the personalities of the men. Dick's probably a lot more private than the rest of the guys, and will let most people get only so close. Kinda sounds like my dad:-) |

I demand to know the address of your publisher. I'm going to march right in there and pry the galley pages from their hot little hands. If that doesn't work, perhaps a doctors' note saying I only have one week to live and a miracle cure, i.e. "The Biggest Brother" is the only thing that will save me..... Though my book copies are on order I simply cannot wait until May! Jack (Any other ideas here, guys?) |

QUOTE(larrya @ Feb 23 2005, 05:30 PM) I tracked down his agent and contacted her myself (I'm a journalist - it's what I do for a living). She hooked me up with Damian and we spoke by e-mail and phone. To answer amallard and others, I will post my mailing address later on this thread. I will sign books and return them to you as long as return postage is paid - the same way Winters does for Band of Brothers. I thank all of you for your kind words and support. Hope the book is as much fun for you all to read as it was to write. Larry, I would prefer to get my book at a signing in New York. I'd rather shake hands with you across a table when I get the book signed than do it by mail. It's far more personal and respectful. |

Larry, is there any chance your book will be translated? For me that would be in Dutch then... (IMG:http://forums.wildbillguarnere.com/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Larry,
So, if you don't mind, I'll send you my copy of your book with return postage as you say its OK (as soon as it comes from amazon.) I understand Winters will do the same for BOB, or I assume for your book if we send return postage, but I think its an imposition for an 87 year old man who has done more for us than we deserve. How does the Major feel about signing books for us? Thanks |

He said BoB has given him all the attention he can handle, so I doubt he will be too receptive to having you send him copies of yet another book for him to sign. I also told him I do not expect him to help promote the book. |

But there's always a part of us that somehow wants to connect with those we respect. Your book will, I'm sure, be enough for me. (Ok, so I admit, I'll get Winters memoirs too when that comes out) Thanks again for writing your book, and I hope you don't mind me sending it to you for a signature. And thanks for your reply. No is always better than no response at all. |
