Oh, I never knew he was burried there. I will have to put some flowers on his site next time I visit grand dad who is burried there also.

I know this is an older post but I'd like to add a couple of facts about Francis Mellet.
Mellet was in 3rd Platoon and was Walter "Smokey" Gordon's assistant machine gunner. When Mellet landed on D-Day he immediately threw away the tripod for the .30 caliber. He later met up with Smokey and other members of 3rd Platoon at Marmion Farm and was featured in a number of pictures taken by Forrest Guth. He is easily identifiable by the heavy shoulder pads he was wearing which were issued to those troopers assigned to machine gun and mortar teams.

Quick addendum: I can't recall which 3rd Platoon vet it was, maybe Forrest but I recall one of them telling me a story about Mellet. Paraphrasing the conversation: It seems that Mellet managed to be one of the few members of Easy without a Purple Heart by the time Bastogne rolled around. Mellet didn't have a premonition to speak but he said that "I've managed to avoid getting hit all this time and I'm afraid when I do, it's going to be bad." Soon after he was dead, killed in the attack on Foy IIRC.

Hi Mooch and all,

Veteran Don King tells that story in the "We Stand Alone Together" documentary.

I think he was killed by that sniper in Noville (2 or 3 other soldiers were killed at the same time), that's also a scene in the serie.
