Would anyone know the names of the troopers that jumped in Lt Winters stick? This must be a tough one....no one seems to have any info on this. Would appreciate any input

Thanks
Morgy
I can tell you John Hogan and Pat Christenson. But there are still 15 others (18-2-Winters =15). I'm sorry, I don't know more (regarding the real stick, not the miniserie's, because I don't know if the troopers were the same).

Aren't you interested in Harry Welsh's stick ? I can tell you more about this one... biggrin.gif

All the best,

Morgy

Oh, and welcome to the boards !!!

Hey Piperpilot42: First off, welcome aboard. Secondly, that's a great question and I will try to get you an answer provided you aren't in too much of a hurry. I will not see Dick Winters until after the Memorial Day holiday, but will ask him if he recalls who they were. I doubt he will recall them all, but you never know.
McIntee
Larry, could you ask him a question from me?

Could you ask if he knew of anyone in Easy with either a Norwegian or scandinavian connection? Reading the book I came across one man KIA in Normandy from Easy with a very nordic sounding name - a Elmer Telstad. I'm thinking he may have been in Meehan's plane but I don't know.

Thanks,

John

I'll see what I can do.

Way-ull, Sue, judging by Tony's synchronized calendar, I'd guess he'd be getting ready to hit Bastogne around about now.

I have a couple of stick lists for the D-day and Holland jumps...let me scrounge around in my messes of piles...don't think I have Winters' though. I do know however, that what was portrayed in the miniseries is not correct. It blurs some of the sticks together. I know Skip Muck was on Chalk #68 with my dad. I believe Bill himself told me that Meehan's plane was 66, Bill was on 67, my dad was on 68 and I have that full list and Winters was on 69...but I might be wrong about Winters..let me check and see if I can find anything....

Well I don't know Susan if you had a chance to verify this, but the BoB mini has put Winters as the jumpmaster of stick 67.

Others I recognized from Winter's stick were Toye, Christensen, Grant, Roe (that one's doubtful).

Larry gave us a pretty good run down of Winter's stick in this thread.

The 17 members of Stick 67 on June 6, 1944, starting with Winters at the door were, Lt. Richard D. Winters, Sgt. Burt Christenson, Pvt. Robert "Jeeter" Leonard, Pvt. Joseph Hogan, Pfc. Woodrow Robbins, Pfc. William Howell, Pvt. Carl Sawasko, Pvt. Richard Bray, Pvt. Richard Van Klinken, Pvt. Thomas Burgess, Pvt. Leo Boyle, Cpl. Donald Hoobler, the next 4 names are not known, and last, but not least, Cpl. Denver "Bull" Randleman, whom Winters placed last to make sure no one in front freezes in the doorway.

Winters was jumpmaster of stick 67. Christensen was in the number 2 seat next to him. Of the others mentioned by Pierre, none were mentioned on the roster for Stick 67 that I have in my notes. However, there are 4 or 5 blanks on this roster where whomever litsed the names was not sure of the names, so Toye, Grant and Roe COULD have been there. One name on the roster is Burr Smith, but Susan tells me he was NOT in Stick 67, so my list is not infallible. Burr Smith and Joe Hogan were bumped from Stick 66 at the last second. Stick 66, of course, was Meehan's flight. Neither man, it must be noted, appreciated being separated from Headquarters company, but in light of what happened, I'm sure they were relieved.

I have Toye as part of Stick 70. Bill is also in that stick. Tommy Burgess may have been in stick 70 as well not stick 67 (He was part of 1st Platoon but Mooch (my resident source for Easy Company info said 70). I originally had him listed in both.

Matt,
Susan Smith Finn first told me that Burgess was on Stick #70. She said that WBG was the source. Later Don Malarkey gave me a copy of his stick list which had Burgess on it.

Winters' stick is still an enigma. There are still 5 or 6 missing names from it.

Thanks Joe. I was just pointing that out mostly do to the fact that the sticks from the old post on this general topic had Burgess listed twice. Did you get my email?
