I'm wondering if anyone can offer any further insight on Herbert Sobel. He seems to be the one character from BoB who just never fits in w/ the other Brothers. Quite a tragic figure. I've seen his portrayal in the series & read about him in Ambrose's and Winters' books. Wikipedia.org has some info also, including: "He reportedly remained bitter about his wartime experiences with Easy Company and did not participate in post-war reunions. He unsuccessfully attempted to commit suicide. When he later died in 1987, his sons and immediate family did not attend his funeral."

I read that one of the men had lunch with him years ago (couple decades or more?) and Sobel continued to express his bitterness, etc. It seems to me this was more than just a case of a bully getting his just desserts... he may have had a mental sickness of some kind?? I'm sure that if he had come to the reunions expressing his willingness to put the past behind him, the others would have accepted him.

Thanks, those were good posts. The HBO link doesn't work anymore, but that's ok.

I found this when surfing just today. I don't know if anyone has talked to this son or not but he post this message on a site.

I am the second of three sons of Captain Herbert M Sobel who in "Band" is portrayed by Schwimmer. I am looking to contact persons to offer my viewpoint as his son. Also, there may be historical inaccuracies in this book regarding my father.

Being an active duty officer I know that not everyone of us are meant to be the perfect leaders. I was thinking just the other day what it would be like if I was not a good pilot and was told I could not fly in combat anymore. I would be heart broken, but in the world where mens lives are on the line you have to send the best to do the best. There are those officers that are better at training people and in this case I think he made the men of easy company hard. I couldn't think of many modern day troops that are as hard as the men of easy company were on D-day. My very best wishes to every member of easy company as the anniversary of DDay approaches. I hope to be flying in the airdrop reenactment this year.

We invited Michael Sobel to the 2002 Easy Company reunion in Phoenix and he attended with his wife and baby. It was very emotional for him and everyone else. He gave a speech at the banquet which moved many to tears. He says his father was a wonderful father and that was the only man he knew, not what was portrayed in Band of Brothers. BK's memories from that reunion might have more detail. He has not responded to further invitations to attend the reunions and seems to want to be left alone.
